Your files

Every browser tool runs inside your browser tab. Files you open are read into your device memory, processed there, and written back out by your browser. No file, no page and no part of any document is transmitted to us or to anyone else. You can confirm this by opening your browser network panel and watching it stay silent while a tool runs.

For these tools we keep no copies because we never receive any. The server tools are described below.

What we do collect

Cookies and advertising. This site sets no cookies at all, and there is no advertising and no visit measurement on it today. Nothing is stored in your browser except the settings described below, which never leave it.

Hosting. The site runs on one server rented from Microsoft Azure, in its Central US region in the United States. It keeps no record of the pages you open. Its error log can hold the network address of a connection that failed, and is deleted after 30 days.

Transfers outside the UK and the EU. The server is in the United States, outside the United Kingdom and the European Union. If you use this site from either, your network address is processed there, as with any website, and the error log may keep it for up to 30 days. Any file you send to a server tool is processed there too. This happens under Microsoft's Data Protection Addendum, which includes the Standard Contractual Clauses the European Commission approved for transfers of personal data outside the European Union.

Stored on your device

We keep a few small settings in your browser and nowhere else: whether you chose light or dark, the last five tools you used (shown on the home page), the options you last set on each tool (including text you typed, such as a watermark, but never a password), and whether you declined the offer to install the site as an app. Your browser also keeps copies of this site's pages and scripts so the tools open without a connection; your files are never part of that. When you send a file from one tool to another, it is held in your browser's own storage until the next tool opens and takes it; a copy older than two minutes is not used and is deleted the next time a tool page opens. Clearing your browser data removes all of it.

Tools that run on our server

A few tools say "Runs on our server" on their page: text recognition, Word and Office conversion, PDF passwords, repair, compression that keeps the text, and background removal. For those, and only those, the file you choose is sent over an encrypted connection to a server we run, processed, sent back, and deleted within 10 minutes of the result being ready, or about a minute after you download it. Pressing Stop deletes it as soon as the step in progress ends, or at once when the job is waiting or finished. The server keeps no copy, no file names and no passwords. Every other tool never sends the file anywhere.

The legal basis

Under the UK and EU GDPR, each use of personal data needs a legal basis. A file you send to a server tool is handled to provide the service you asked for, and for nothing else. The error log is kept on the basis of legitimate interest: it is needed to find and fix faults, and it is deleted after 30 days.

Who is responsible

WholeFiles, based in India, runs this site and is responsible for the data described on this page. The address on the contact page reaches the people who run it.

Your rights

If you are in the United Kingdom, the European Union or California you may ask what we hold about you, and ask us to correct it or delete it. Since we do not hold files and do not build profiles, the answer is usually short. Write to the address on the contact page.

If you are in the United Kingdom or the European Union, you may also complain to a data protection authority: the Information Commissioner's Office in the United Kingdom, or the authority in your country in the European Union.
